Live from the Apple Worldwide Developer Conference 2008

The iPhone 2.0 Software and iPhone 3G (hardware) has been announced by Apple at the Apple WWDC on June 9, 2008. IS&T has been working with Apple as part of the iPhone Enterprise Beta Program since March 2008 (under a Non-Disclosure Agreement). The following list provides publicly available information about both the hardware and software that is known to date (note: the information below may change as Apple and AT&T may make changes prior to the launch).

Hardware (iPhone 3G)

  • Availability: July 11, 2008 (Friday)
  • 3G Support: The iPhone 3G will take advantage of AT&T's 3G (3rd Generation) network based on HSPA technology. This means the internet access when using the AT&T's data network will result in considerably faster connection speed than the previous version of the iPhone.
  • Lower Price: $199 for 8 GB model, $299 for 16 GB model
  • GPS is built-in to the iPhone 3G. This will provide more accurate location-based services for the iPhone 3G users.
  • International Usage: iPhone 3G will work in more countries than before. While full details are not yet available, it is speculated that the iPhone 3G will have roaming capabilities for countries that include Japan, South Korea, and other countries that the previous version did not.

Purchasing and Activation

Migration from old iPhone to iPhone 3G

  • iPhone EDGE > iPhone 3G
    • Erase data on the old device. Apple recommends that the old device be upgraded with iPhone 2.0 software. Once the iPhone has been upgraded to iPhone 2.0 software, perform Erase All Content and Settings. This process will take approximately 1 hour for 8GB iPhone and should completely wipe the data off the old iPhone.
