Description

This page describes the process of creating the MSRED student list serve as well as student-only chat option

MOIRA LIST SERVS

  • cre-students: This list-serve is for ALL currently registered students
  • msred20xx: This list-serve is for the newest cohort
  • msred20xx_febgrads: This list-serve is for the students continuing in the 16-month program

Consult with CRE IT Manager Casey Eyring when creating new lists

New lists will be connected to the cre-students cre-students@mit.edu list which will connect them to the other resources (Papercut/Arch Software)

Each year, an email address is created for the new cohort.

  • Create a Moira List
  • The naming structure is: msred20XX
  • Create the list once you have a new class, adding their MIT and non-MIT email addresses.
    • Most MIT offices only utilize their MIT address from the very first interaction, and having both MIT and non-MIT addresses to start allows you to help students orient themselves ("check your MIT email, MIT offices will only contact you there").  After a couple months of those reminders, phase out their non-MIT email address use, too.
    • Usually until mid-summer, blind-copy the group on updates/steps, to avoid bombardment of emails as they talk to each other, not realizing the admin is on the list.  Their orientation site includes ways to connect (Facebook, WhatsApp, Slack) and so blind-copying their group email list isn't an issue in that regard.
  • Around mid-July, email them to let them know you're removing their non-MIT email addresses and will communicate only through their MIT email address going forward.  Remove their non-MIT email addresses from the listserv on IS&Ts website.
  • Until Orientation, only have the Grad Admin and Assistant on the listserv; there's a lot of matriculation items there's no need to bog others down with.
    • Once orientation begins, add:
      • Kelly Cameron
      • Bettina Urcuioli
  • Due to the uptick in students taking the 16-month option, a new list serv has been introduced.
  • As the end of the spring semester, the continuing students are moved to a new list called MSRED20XX_febgrads
  • This list is then linked to the main CRE-Students list, which will include the new cohort as well as the continuing.
  • Separating the lists out in this manner allows for cohort-specific direct communication.
  • By aggregating them all under are-students, it is easy to communicate with all cohorts.

Setting up the MOIRA list:

1. Go to groups.mit.edu
2. Click Create a New List in the top left section
3. Select Moira from the types of lists and click Next
4. Use the following options:
* Name of the list: ‘msred2025’ or whatever the year is. This keeps with the names of the other lists. We’ve also used msred2024_febgrad and msred2024_may to denotate other mid-year graduates.
* For description, you can say “MSRED 2025 Students”
* List Owner: select Another List from the downdown, and use ‘msred-owner’
* Select mailing list and AFS/Active Directory group options.
5. Click Next, then Next again to create the list
6. Return to webmoira (groups.mit.edu) and add the members to the list. It will be on the left-hand column under “Lists I can administer”
