Introduction
A Blue Yeti USB Microphone is available for audio recording for small-scale projects. As of August 2023, the microphone resides in 9-338.
Use cases
You may consider employing in this microphone for small-scale/DIY projects for the Center, including but not limited to:
- Tutorial videos
- Podcast episodes
- Recorded interviews
- Class recordings
- etc.
Larger-scale or professional productions will warrant professional assistance from MIT AV.
Because this is an item to be shared amongst the Center, please be considerate with how long you use it.
Set-up
The microphone is compatible with both Windows and Mac machines. However, there is slight variation in the set-up procedure between the two.
Windows (7, 8.1, 10)
- Plug the microphone into an available USB-A port.
- Open up the Control Panel (It can be found in the Start menu).
- From the Control Panel, select the Sound icon.
- Click the recording tab and select Yeti.
- If you want to use the microphone as a playback device, click the Playback tab and select Yeti. In order to hear the audio, you will need to connect a pair of wired headphones or earbuds (3.5 mm) to the circular port at the bottom of the microphone.
After the set-up process has been completed, configure your recording software to use this device if necessary. In Audacity, this can be done with the Audio Setup button.
Mac
- Plug the microphone into an available USB-A port. You may need an adapter; check AV closet in 9-338 if so.
- Open system preferences and select the Sound icon.
- Click the Input tab and select Blue Yeti.
- If you want to use the microphone as a playback device, click the Output tab and select Yeti. From this screen, set the output volume to 100%. In order to hear the audio, you will need to connect a pair of wired headphones or earbuds (3.5 mm) to the circular port at the bottom of the microphone.
After the set-up process has been completed, configure your recording software to use this device if necessary. In Audacity, this can be done with the Audio Setup button.

Recording tips
If possible, record in a quiet space with only the people involved in the audio recording.
Position the microphone so that the Blue logo and headphone volume knob are facing you. This microphone is side-speaking, meaning you should speak into the side with the blue logo facing the audio source (e.g., your mouth). Do not speak into the top of the microphone.
