Leadership in Outside Organizations and Activities

MIT is and has been seen as a leader in many domains, and IS&T, in particular, is a leader in the IT community through the work of its staff in a wide variety of national and international organizations. The following lists the many organizations in which IS&T staff have held leadership positions in furthering MIT's mission.

2010 Activities

2008 Activities

  • Program Management Office special interest group (SIG) -- a component of the Project Management Institute.  Darlene Fladager has been appointed to serve as the Director of Analytics to support the review and expansion of SIG membership. 
  • Town of North Andover, Massachusetts Information Technology Consolidation Task Force -- Kathy Pagones O'Neill has been appointed to serve on this 2008/2009 task force chartered with identifying IT consolidation opportunities across municipal and school departments, and a corresponding implementation plan and budget. 
  • Boston Consortium:  IT/Libraries Communications and Outreach Group -- Christine Fitzerald continued to work with facilitator at the Consortium to host meetings in March and June 2008. 
  • Learning Tree International: Steve Winig participated in the development and review of Learning Tree International's new class entitled Relationship Management for IT Professionals.  http://www.learningtree.com/courses/902.htm.
  • Relationship/Account Management Community of Practice: Steve Winig continued as the chair of this group of leaders of Relationship Management and Account Management programs within both university and industry environments.
  • Greater Boston Chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery (GBC/ACM http://www.gbcacm.org): This is the Boston chapter of an international professional society for people interested in computer science and the theory and practice of computer technology. One evening a month, it provides lectures on computer-related topics. These are open to the public and free. (A number of them are held on the MIT campus.)

  • Northeast Community Source PMO - Steve Winig is a founding member of this newly created group of leaders of Project Management Offices (or equivalent) across higher-education.  This group intends to adhere to the mantra of "think globally, act locally," by working collaboratively to ensure the development, distribution, communication, and continuous improvement of project and portfolio management concepts and tools.  While the focus will be on enhancing the effectiveness and efficiency of the member organizations offices, relevant information will also shared with a broader audience.

2007 Activities

  •  Boston Consortium:  Christine Fitzgerald founded the IT/Libraries Communications and Outreach Group in collaboration with the Consortium and colleagues from Brandeis and Boston College.  Group launched with 1st meeting November 2007.
  • The Common Solutions Group: A group composed of senior technologists and managers from 25 major research universities dedicated to developing common solutions for problems/challenges facing their institutions. IS&T Contributors and contribution:
    • MIT hosted the meeting in September, 2007.
    • Paul Hill and Jerry Grochow represent MIT on a regular basis.
  • Thalia - MIT's application framework for the management of image and other digital media that was developed by Information Services and Technology - was nominated by Questcon (our partner for Quality Assurance of Thalia) and won a 2007 InfoWorld 100 Award.      Project Lead: Catherine Iannuzzo, Manager, DSPS/ISDA/IS&T
     Project Description: MIT's Information Services and Technology group developed Thalia, an application framework for the management of image and other digital media. To ensure the product's success, MIT partnered with Questcon Technologies, a QA and test specialty firm, to validate the application before releasing to MIT's departments. Thalia comprises a rich Web client and the Image Management Engine, which provides a framework of distinct, reusable components via its REST-style APIs. Thalia's Web client was built using OpenLaszlo and is compiled to create a Flash interface. Thalia's back end comprises Java servlets exposed as REST Web services, and it interfaces with the Alfresco open source ECM (enterprise content management) system. The framework allows MIT departments to upload, organize, tag, present, discuss, and search multimedia content.
  • Research Universities Computing Consortium: Jerry Grochow is one of the founders of this group of CIOs from the largest research universities. He organized the May 2007 meeting on issues related to support of research computing on campus.
  • Apple University Executive Forum: Jerry Grochow represents MIT on this group of university CIOs advising Apple Corporation on products and services used in the university environment. He helped organize the iPhone Task Force.
  • Relationship/Account Management Community of Practice: Steve Winig continued as the chair of this group of leaders of Relationship Management and Account Management programs within both university and industry environments. Members of the group participated in a panel discussion at Educause 2007.
  • KUALI Student Service System: now that MIT has officially joined this multi-university collaborative software development effort as a Partner, JoAnne Stevenson and Scott Thorne are playing leadership roles on behalf of the MIT contribution to the project, in the business analysis and services architecture capacities, respectively.

2006 Activities

  • Relationship/Account Management Community of Practice: Steve Winig established this group of universities and industry representatives to provide a collaborative forum for leaders of Relationship Management or Account Management programs to discuss experiences, challenges, and successes. Membership includes Stanford University, Cornell University, the Bose Corporation, and MIT.
  • Indian Knowledge Commission: Vijay Kumar (AC) led a workshop in mid-August in New Delhi, India, on Open Educational Resources for the Indian Knowledge Commission, formed by direction of the Primer Minister of India. The Knowledge Commission is to develop recommendations for directions in eLearning for the Prime Minister. Contributing sessions were:

    • Phil Long (AC) presenting on the iCampus project wtih special emphasis on iLabs
  • Seminars in Academic Computing: Held in Snowmass, CO. which developed the theme "Thriving Amidst Rapid and Relentless Transformation", held the first week in August. Phil Long (AC) was conference progam committee chair. Keynotes at the confernence were Vint Cerf (VP and Chief Internet Evangelist, Google), Randy Bass (Assist. Provost, Georgetown Univ.), and Marylin McMillian (CIO, NYU).
  • Campus Technologies Conference: Held in Boston in July with MIT as the "local host" (Phil Long, AC, coordinator). A day on campus featured tours of MIT's Media Lab, the Stata Buliding, and learning spaces organized by Katie Livingston-Vale (AC), Laxmi Rao (AC), Oliver Thomas (CSS) & Phil Long (AC). In addition, the conference featured a half day track with the theme "lessons learned from educational technology experiments" which featured Vijay Kumar (IS&T AC), William Reilly (MIT Libraries), Chris Merlan (OCW), Phil Long (IS&T AC) and Lori Brelow (TLL).
  • Pan Australian iCampus Conference: Held at the Univeristy of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia, in late June and co-organized by Phil Long (AC), and Mark Schulz (UQ), and iCampus Australia Coordinator. The conference pulled together univeristies across Australia interested in open source educational technologies, anchored by the MIT iCampus project. A one-day iLabs workshop was also held and plans for a second Australian iCampus workshop coincident with Educause Australia are in process.
  • Asian iCampus Conference: Organized by Phil Long (AC) with co-organizer Sean Gilbert, China Program Director for MISTI, in Beijing, China, in mid-June for iCampus, and a follow up two day workshop on building iLabs led by Jesus del Alamo, HAL Ableson (EECS), Steve Lerman (CEE), Jud Harward, Phil Bailey (CECI), Paul Oak (MSR) & Jim Hardison (EECS). The confernence and workshop also included iCampus hub partner the University of Queensland (Australia) represented by Prof. Mark Schulz (ITEE) and undergraduate student Joel Carpenter.
  • Internet2: A consortium being led by 206 universities working in partnership with industry and government to develop and deploy advanced network applications and technologies, accelerating the creation of tomorrow's Internet.

  • Asia-Pacific Advanced Network: APAN provides an advanced networking environment for the research and education community in the Asia-Pacific region, and promotes global collaboration.
  • IVY+ FAP - Angie Milonas and Allison Dolan hosted the IVY+ Finance, Administration and Planning for IT (Finance, Admin, HR and related from IVY+ schools) - excellent resource/sharing around such issues as telephone/network cost models, attracting and retaining IT staff, etc

  • Syllabus: Syllabus media is an integrated channel of print, e-media, and conferences to efficiently reach IT professionals, administrators, and tech-savvy faculty with buying authority in higher education institutions. Syllabus magazine is published 10 times per year and circulates to over 50,000 BPA audited subscribers.

  • Internet2: A consortium being led by 206 universities working in partnership with industry and government to develop and deploy advanced network applications and technologies, accelerating the creation of tomorrow's Internet. IS&T Contributors and contributions:

  • Greater Boston Chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery (GBC/ACM): This is the Boston chapter of an international professional society for people interested in computer science and the theory and practice of computer technology. One evening a month, it provides lectures on computer-related topics. These are open to the public and free. (A number of them are held on the MIT campus.) GBC/ACM also offers six day-long Saturday Professional Development Seminars. These are inexpensive (~$100 / Seminar) and feature expert speakers. (For the last several years, the Professional Development Seminars have been held on the MIT campus.)IS&T Contributors and contribution:

  • Boston Chapter of the IEEE Computer Society (IEEE/CS): This is the Boston chapter of an international professional society. The Society is dedicated to advancing the theory, practice, and application of computer and information processing technology. One evening a month, it provides lectures on computer-related topics.   • Educause: A nonprofit association whose mission is to advance higher education by promoting the intelligent use of information technology. EDUCAUSE programs include professional development activities, print and electronic publications, strategic policy initiatives, research, awards for leadership and exemplary practices, and a wealth of online information services. The current membership comprises nearly 1,900 colleges, universities, and education organizations, including more than 180 corporations, and more than 13,000 active member representatives.   • National Learning Infrastructure Initiative: The NLII vision is education that is active and learner-centered, dynamic and lifelong, collaborative, cost-effective, high-quality, and accessible. Its mission is to create new collegiate learning environments that harness the power of information technology to improve the quality of teaching and learning, contain or reduce rising costs, and provide greater access to higher education.

  • Syllabus: Syllabus media is an integrated channel of print, e-media, and conferences to efficiently reach IT professionals, administrators, and tech-savvy faculty with buying authority in higher education institutions. Syllabus magazine is published 10 times per year and circulates to over 50,000 BPA audited subscribers.

  • US Army Distance Learning Subcommittee: Advisory group appointed by the Secretary of the Army to advise them on technologies and teaching strategies that can improve training for the wide range of Army personnel eduational needs.

  • Seminars in Academic Computing: provides a unique opportunity for those actively involved in leading IT efforts to support the mission of their higher education institution. The organization conducts an annual Directors Leadership Seminar. The SAC program also features the Executive Leadership Seminar and the New Directors Leadership Seminar.

  • TLT Group: An affiliate of the American Association for Higher Education. The TLT Group works to improve teaching and learning by making more appropriate and cost-effective use of information technology without sacrificing what matters most.

  • Sakai Project: A community source software development project founded by the University of Michigan, Indiana University, MIT, Stanford, the uPortal Consortium, and the Open Knowledge Initiative (OKI) with the support of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The project is producing open source Collaboration and Learning Environment (CLE) software with the first release in July 2004. The Sakai Educational Partners' Program (SEPP) extends this community source project to other academic institutions around the world, and is supported by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation and SEPP member contributions.
