Creating Initial XP VM

  1. Run New Virtual Machine Wizard (VMware Workstation 6.5.3 on Windows Vista Enterprise 64 bit)
    1. Configure Virtual Machine
    2. Specify Windows XP ISO
      1. It detected this was a Windows XP disc
      2. VMware Prompted for easy install
        1. Product Key: <enter MIT Product Key>
        2. Full Name: MIT
        3. Passwords left blank
      3. Virtual Machine Name: Windows XP for MIT Students (we should vet this)
    3. Specify Disk Capacity
      1. Maximum disk size: 14 GB (to fit within 15.8GB according to the Pocket ACE calculator)
      2. Store as single file (note: this may be a problem re:portability jrc)
    4. Customize Hardware
      1. Memory: 2048 MB
      2. Floppy Removed
      3. New CD/DVD (IDE) Use ISO image and connect at power on (need to change after install)
      4. Network - NAT and Connect at power on (default)
      5. USB Controller - Enable high-speed support for USB 2.0 and Automatically connect new USB devices checked
      6. Sound Card - AutoDetect and use default host sound card (default)
      7. Display - Use host setting for monitors and Accelerate 3D graphics (default)
      8. Processors  - 1 default
    5. Turn Off VM
  2. Defragment Drive
    1. Double click on HD -> Utilities -> Defrag
  3. Configure IE homepage to web.mit.edu
  4. Setup Display resolution to 1024x768 (32 bit colors)
  5. Download and configure mitsus.reg
    1. http://sus.mit.edu/mitsus.reg
  6. Clean up unnecessary Windows stuff
    1. Add/Remove Programs
    2. Windows Components
    3. Uncheck
      1. MSN Explorer
      2. Outlook Express
      3. Windows Media Player
      4. Windows Messenger
    4. Check
      1. Other Network File and Print Services
  7. Run Windows Update
    1. Install
    2. Custom
    3. Install 48 High Priority Updates
      1. Skipped IE8 install (come back to it later)
    4. Restart
    5. Complete Windows Genuine Advantage Wizard
  8. Run Windows Update Again
    1. Install Microsoft Update (gets Office updates too)
    2. Check for Updates
    3. Custom
    4. Uncheck Windows Media 11 SDK
    5. Check (Hardware, Optional)
      1. Microsoft Corporation - Sound - Creative AudioPCI (ES1371,ES1373) (WDM)
    6. Install
    7. Audio Still Not Working - FIXEXD
