Transcription of call number

The call number is only transcribed onto the t.p. verso of books in the following circumstances:

  • Unbarcoded govdoc serials
  • Non-Roman language material (to ease identification should barcode and label be missing)
  • Items in envelopes (in case item is separated from its barcoded envelope)
  • Large multivolume sets (catalogers' judgment, if it will help them keep track of what's done and not done)
  • Older books that are being “ecataloged”

In these cases:

  • cataloger transcribes the call number in pencil onto the verso of the title page
  • look for the greatest expanse of white space on the t.p. verso, but generally try to keep the call number as close as possible to the center of the page.
  • do not transcribe call number so that text separates any of the lines
  • write call number on a white archival quality foil-backed 1½ x 1 in. label if the verso of the t.p. is a dark color, or obscured by an illustration or text (do not cover important information with label)
  • transcribe a number that looks like this in OCLC: TP248.25.M46 $b H64 2003 as:

TP248.25
.M46
.H64
2003

  • No labels
