Why provide weekly project team updates?

Weekly project team updates allow the project manager to reconnect with the team as well as document status on tasks, action items and next steps. It also allows the project manager to stay up to speed on issues impacting project success that need to be communicated to managers and sponsors.  It is an integral part of the overall communication plan for a project.

What to Include in the weekly project status report
  1. Overall Status - Green (on plan), Yellow (Needs attention), Red (In trouble)
  2. Accomplishments to date - List of accomplishments for current phase since last sponsor report
  3. Upcoming milestones - Key tasks and activities planned until next sponsor meeting
  4. Issues - List of issues and proposed resolution if any
  5. Risks - List of risks and strategy for addressing each risk (accept, mitigate, transfer, avoid)
