GR3 Paper Prototyping
Briefing
We are developing an application called PackIt. This is a mobile application to help you pack for your trips. By entering your trip information, you can see a list of suggested items that you should pack. From there, you can also add more/remove items to pack, and then mark them off as you pack. In addition to a list of items to bring, this app offers packing and travel tips to help make your trip a memorable experience.
User testing - Iteration One
Paper Prototype |
Task |
Observations |
---|---|---|
|
Add a new trip entitled "My New Trip" to Europe for 7 days for yourself from March 24 - March 30 |
Users thought the '+' button was to be pressed first in order to add the trip. Thought the gender slider was interesting. |
|
'Pack' these items: |
Users were confused by the green number on the backpack (there to indicate the number of luggages/backpacks currently using). Wasn't sure where to start when packing shirts |
|
View weather information |
Users had no trouble finding the weather information |
|
'Unpack' 2 shirts |
Generally had no trouble. One user thought that the 'Reset' button at the button would automatically unpack all the clothes already packed |
|
Change your trip and extend it by 3 days |
The reset button was misleading for users, since they believed that pressing it would erase all the packing they had done earlier. The task of the button itself was intuitive, and users knew that they could press it to go edit their trip information. |
|
Add these items to the list of things you want to pack: |
Users had a hard time finding the +/- button indicating adding and removing items from the list of items to bring. Would generally look around aimlessly until they found it. When they pulled up the edit popup, didn't realize what to do. Some users would try and press add before actually typing in an item name |
|
Remove all scarves from the list of items that you want to bring |
Users didn't realize they had scarves in their to-bring list. They were also confused on the distinction between packing an item and removing it from the shelf, since both actions removed items from the shelf but the latter removes it entirely without the possibility of it returning |

User testing - Iteration Two
Paper Prototype |
Task |
Observations |
---|---|---|
|
Add a new trip entitled "My New Trip" to Europe for 7 days for yourself from March 24 - March 30 |
|
|
'Pack' these items: |
One user had trouble understanding the paper prototype - tried picking up the icons to move into the backpack. Users correctly packed the items and navigated through the different shelf categories fine. |
|
View weather information |
One user took a while to scan for the buttons at the bottom of the screen. Users had no trouble finding the weather information. |
|
'Unpack' 2 shirts |
Users had no trouble unpacking the two shirts. |
|
Change your trip and extend it by 3 days |
Users had no trouble editing trip information and extending it by 3 days. |
|
Add these items to the list of things you want to pack: |
Users were still slightly confused with the concept of editing the list of things you want to bring (as opposed to the list of things you have packed), although they realized that there were only 3 shirts on the shelf, and that they had to add more. Same with the lack of bagpipes in the MISC category. Shelf concept and 'edit shelf' button made it better for users to recognize a shelf of items they want to bring. Eventually figured everything out faster than in first iteration. |
|
Remove all scarves from the list of items that you want to bring |
One user did not think he was bringing scarves until he checked the winter gear category. Users had no trouble removing all the scarves. 2 out of the 3 users also intuitively used the 'click to move one, drag to move all' on this to remove all the scarves. |
