The Broader Impacts Group (BIG) focuses on bringing graduate students at WHOI/MIT opportunities to gain skills in science communication. Through student-led efforts, BIG achieves this mission by constructing workshops with different "experts" in science communication - from radio journalists to oral communications consultants - and providing opportunities for graduate students to practice these skills through outreach or citizen science projects. BIG also works to cultivate a growing network and dialogue among science communicators in the Woods Hole and Cambridge communities.

The WHOI Graduate Christian Fellowship is a group of graduate students who meet regularly for small group bible study, prayer, and social activities. We welcome you to fellowship with us as we grow in faith together during this challenging and exciting phase of our lives! This committee has been formed to welcome and to help acclimate international visitors to the Institution and the community. The Committee has produced The Handbook for International Visitors . There are a limited number of bicycles available for international visitors through the committee (contact: Andy Beet x3376). Runs an English as a Second Language (ESL) tutoring program (contact: Penny Foster x2294).

Established in 1973, the Women’s Committee at WHOI is an elected committee responsible for considering matters of special concern to women. Its primary charge is to be a forum for the ideas and concerns of women associated with WHOI. Each member is charged to make herself aware of pertinent issues and to be accessible to the women around her, to better represent them in the committee. The eight-member committee represents all women at the Institution: Joint Program Students, members of the Scientific, Technical, and Exempt Administrative Staffs, and members of the Graded Administrative and Research Staff. G.L.O.W. is a student-staff liaison support group for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered and questioning members of the WHOI community and their allies. The group is dedicated to creating a more welcoming Woods Hole research community (WHOI, MBL, NMFS, SEA, USGS, and WHRC) for gays, lesbians, bisexuals, transsexuals and transgendered individuals as well as their partners and allies, and to provide resources to anyone who may need them. It aims to provide a point of contact for people seeking information, support, avenues for addressing workplace issues, and social outlets. There are monthly informational and social meetings and all are welcome.
