Each trip has a theme. You are expected to attend all business trips that occur while you are

enrolled; if you have a conflict, speak with the SDM office as far in advance as is practical. There are

some different ideas about their purpose, and this is not only true on the student end.

 

Prominent thrusts, staff side:

  • Doing things that just cannot be done at a distance: special speakers, things similar to the Beer Game, time with co-directors both socially and to collect feedback.
  • Face time with faculty, where they schedule special speakers etc.

 

Student side:

  • Face time with your peers
  • Team projects
  • Focused time away from work

 

Hotels:

You will also need a place to sleep (they close the libraries at night) while here. Some recommendations from students follow. Many (most?) are booked months in advance, especially for business trips it seems. For an October trip, start calling around by August 1 (no kidding). Ask about MIT rates, but expect to be asked for a letter on official letterhead (signature also helps) to “prove” you are eligible for the MIT rate; the office sends will supply letters. The SDM office will supply other leads, but you get to do the calling around.
