Gulf of Maine

  • Catches have declined steadily for the past four years, and are "well below the maxima taken during the 1970s and 1980s"
  • Spawning stock has increased since the late 1990s
  • The stock remains overfished, and overfishing continues.

Grand Banks

  • The 2005 catch was a record low
  • Landings from the eastern section are taken (mostly) during first and second quarters
  • Landings from the western section account for most of the catch. Catches are highest in the second calendar quarter, but landings occur throughout the year.
  • Most of the landings are of "market" size (medium)
  • Total Biomass has decreased since the 1970s, and has shown no trend since 1994.
  • The stock remains below average in terms of Biomass Index
  • Considered overfished and overfishing is occuring.
