Overview
This nozzle was turned to accommodate the OW-152-4G #1 hotfire.
Design and Manufacture
Charlie G turned this nozzle from 5.0 in stock in the AeroAstro machine shop. Due to his crappy caliper skills, the throat was turned to 1.4 in diameter.
Post Fire Review
The nozzle cracked badly. Pictures below.
Attempting to remove the nozzle insert from the phenolic liner caused a structural failure around the axial plane of the graphite. Thermal damage is visible as discoloration through the graphite. The o-ring at this location is in particularly bad shape. The phenolic had clearly ablated on the interior of the liner.
The nozzle was then deliberately pulled apart along a large radial crack.
The remains of this nozzle were discarded 1-25-2018.
