To: linux-ponder@mit.edu

Next meeting is Monday 2 March 2009 11:00 to 12:30 in N42-286

Agenda will be:
Combine Key components with Use Cases -- Define what is necessary to
support the use cases.

----

Notes from Monday, February 2, 2009 N42-202

Attending: jdreed, bowser, wdc, alexp, blang

Agenda: Define use cases for Classes of service.

Class of Service: (We discovered we needed to make finer grained
classes of service.)

Desktop/Laptop Client
A Continuum of Customization:
	Least customized is most centrally managed.

 * Athena Cluster is the "IS&T Owned and Managed" class of service.
	General purpose computing
		- Connectivity/Communication
		- Document Preparation
	Courseware -- Applications tailored for consistent use in
		teaching.
		- Software Version, OS etc. / Fast SW deployment
		  Sometimes having the same app. version is important.
	Research (access to obscure scientific software)
	Academic Computing Testbed (e.g. Collaborative Cluster, High
		Performance Windows Cluster, Computing w/Graphics
		chips, Virtualization)

 * DLC Managed
	DLC Specific Software
	DLC infrastructure access (printing, storage, etc.)
	Physical Access Restriction
	General Purpose Computing but less emphasis than in Clusters.
	Courseware but focused to DLC.
	Research but focused to DLC.
	Distributed Computing

 * Individually Managed
        - Personally owned vs. Institute owned
          (Matters to Software Licensing.)
	HEAVY emphasis on General Purpose Computing.
	Ability to select individual key components.
	Pre-packaged Courseware (for students) (e.g. Student Matlab)

Server
 * IS&T Infrastructure (our servers).
 * DLC Co-Location (Power and network in our computer room)
 * DLC Hosted (Maintenance of OS in DLC computer room)

Application specific Server (e.g. License Server, SAP, ECAT)
Infrastructure services (e.g. Mail, Print, Web)
Database (e.g. Filemaker, Oracle, MYSQL)
LAMP servers
Timesharing (may be Athena cluster use cases)

Questions:

Q: Are we talking General Computing use cases, or Linux-Specific ones?
A: We are starting with general cases, and will visit Linux Platform
later.

Q: Where does backup (e.g. TSM) fit in our use cases?
A: It seems implicit in the kind of management used on the various
Classes of service.

Q: Where does Virtualization fit as a use case?
A: Not sure.  It's a platform aspect, it's a testbed aspect.
