Problem Statement

Hand-sewing is an extremely useful skill that can potentially become a great outlet for creativity. Sadly, many people do not even know the most basic sewing skills to do simple tasks such as repairing a seam or sewing on a button.

Because it is such a hands on discipline, sewing is most easily learned with in-person instruction; however, this is not possible for many, because they may not know someone who can teach them and classes are often expensive. People who wish to learn how to sew on their own without another's guidance may have difficulty getting into it or several reasons:

  • The tasks involved in simply preparing for sewing can be more complicated than they may first imagine
  • They may have difficulty finding an interesting project suitable to their skill level
  • While beginner kits are available, they find may not provide sufficiently clear instructions
  • Beginners may easily make many mistakes that are extremely difficult or even impossible to recover from
  • While a wide variety of how-tos exist online, they may not be coherent enough for a complete beginner to really get a good handle on sewing as a discipline.
