Briefing

To brief our users we wanted to give them a solid understanding of what our site is used for without giving too much information about how the site works. There were two parts to our test. In the first part the user was a recent college graduate wanting to create a resume on our site. We let them know that our site was used to create resumes that are enhanced with added media. For the second portion the user played the role of an employer that was viewing an already completed resume of a job applicant. This portion was pretty self explanatory and did not need much briefing. Overall our briefing was short and to the point in order to let the users figure out as much as possible for themselves, thus giving us better feedback.

User Feedback

Feedback from Prototyping Day 1 (Iteration 1)

User 1:

  • Clicked the add button to edit existing school
  • Where did the paperclips go? No visible way to add supplemental content
  • User clicked the boilerplate text saying "and then add supplemental content" to attach the video
  • Didn't know if he could edit school by clicking on boilerplate, thought needed to click add
  • Where will "add another" put the new school?
  • Add another: should edit if there aren't any existing

User 2:

  • Correctly edited contact info
  • Hesitation for choosing where to click to edit school
  • Trouble finding attach button; once it was clear that paperclip was icon, he figured it out.
  • No problems on dialog
  • Difficulty finding how to attach
  • More affordances that text is editable.

User 3:

  • Pressed enter to dismiss editing, also tried blurring element
  • Hesitated on where to click to edit education
  • Started attach video task too early
  • Visible feedback needed after adding supplement
  • "Inspire picture editing" -- make it clear that they should upload a picture
  • Allow pictures to be links (instead of uploads?)
  • Didn't use the "copy text" button, manually selected and copied
  • Mailed link to himself to save.
  • Clicked video text to play it, didn't recognize slate icon
  • Data entry is straightforward
  • Do extraneous "add another" (without filling in any text) disappear on blur?

Feedback from Prototyping Day 2 (Iteration 2)

User 1:

  • The mousing over effect definitely improved affordance to edit text
  • Raised question of what happens when done editing? Do they hit enter? Save button? Click outside of edit area?
  • Ambiguous whether he sees a preview of his photo before uploading it
  • Clicks on "click to edit" text to edit instead of anywhere in that area - maybe text should be something like "click area/anywhere to edit" or something
  • Will "http://" text go away when copying the video link into the field?
  • Can we preview a video before saving it?

User 2:

  • Tried to click "upload" button before "browse"  button when uploading picture
  • Had some trouble finding the "public link" link
  • No problems with most tasks

User 3:

  • Users seem to always have trouble finding where to add media until we make it clear the icons are paper clips
  • Clicked "link" tab instead of "video" when trying to add a video
  • No other issues with the tasks

Changes between prototypes

As a result of the first round of testing, we decided to increase the visibility of the interface, underscoring the difference between editable, boilerplate text (in light pencil) and the dark, already entered text. We also added visual feedback on the hover (which we indicated to the user as they were moving their hand over the paper). Finally, we increased the size of some of the icons to increase their visibility. We found that these changes reduced the confusion that users had with the initial tasks.

We also provided clearer instructions and feedback (in the form of the facilitator), which helped us get better feedback.

Description

Edit page. Grey text corresponds to something metaphorically pencilled in and needing edit, as opposed to the black text that does not need editing.

The user has inputted some contact information, now in Black as it will show up publicly.

Mousing over an editable section prompts a change in background color, and appearance of a click to edit notification.

User has entered college info and connected a video.

Modal dialogue for retrieving a public link and marking as public.

Great! From your iteration, it seems like you got some useful feedback from the first iteration. I would recommend, if you haven't, consolidating the feedback from the second iteration into a list of things you want to do.
