We use logical transfers for content where recovering additional information from drives or media such as deleted files or the full content of a drive is deemed unnecessary based on appraisal done by the archivist. See the disk imaging and logical transfer workflow section for examples where each type of imaging is appropriate. Look at the brief descriptions below and determine which tool best work for your situation and follow the links to the workflow documentation.

Logical transfer

CCA Tools requires use of BitCurator, a customized Linux operating system, that we run on a virtual machine through Windows or as a standalone machine on FRED.

To access on Windows, follow these steps:

  1. Click on the Oracle Virtual Box shortcut on the Windows desktop screen

  2. Virtual Box will open, click on the BitCurator with the most current version number after it (e.g. 4.4.0)

  3. Wait for the operating system to load. Once you see a screen with a blue background, BitCurator is ready to use.

To access on FRED, turn on the computer and log in with the BitCurator username (bcadmin) and password.

CCA Tools

CCA tools is our preferred way to perform a logical transfer. It is a set of utilities created by the Canadian Center for Architecture. CCA tools runs a number of tools in addition to transferring the files which will allow us to better understand a transfer, such as file type identification, virus scanning, PII detection, and checksum creation and will package the files in a way Archivematica can understand.

Archives Transfer Tool

The Archives Transfer Tool is a web-based tool transfer app for donors to transfer digital material (often for MIT community groups and members). A transfer will most likely have been set up by the Collections Team and the digital archivist and the files can be found in the "erst" folder of the submission drive. The instructions at the link above explain how to confirm the transfer and get it ready for processing.

Exactly

Exactly is a tool for creating bags (based on the BagIt specification). If you are acquiring material that cannot be sent remotely or are confident that material being transferred is very straightforward and doesn’t need to be scanned for viruses, PII, or characterized before entering Archivematica, we can put it in a bag to ensure the transfer has checksums (to ensure nothing changes when moved) and some minimal metadata. Exactly currently has a 150 GB limit per transfer, if you are moving content that exceeds that limit, please consult the digital archivist.
