ATIC, Accessibility, and Usability Accomplishments for FY2009

- IS&T's ATIC (Adaptive Technology Information Center) completed 287
Adaptive Technology consultations to MIT students, faculty, and staff with
disabilities and temporary injuries, recommending or providing software and
hardware solutions specific to individual abilities.   An adaptive
technology, such as magnification or text-to-speech software, promotes
greater work/study independence and effectiveness by enabling individuals to
perform tasks that they may otherwise not be able to accomplish without
assistance and more expensive accommodations.

- ATIC supported a 53% increase in the number of MIT undergraduate and
graduate students requiring use of the ATIC Lab in 7-143, an IS&T computing
cluster for students with disabilities, medical conditions, and temporary
injuries.  The ATIC Lab provides equipment and services required for MIT to
meet its obligation to provide timely access to academic services, materials
and programs.

- Completed 159 Accessibility design, code, and screen reader reviews of web
sites and applications for 47 MIT DLCs (Departments, Labs and Centers).
Accessibility reviews assess web designs and underlying code to identify
issues and solutions that ensure accessibility to the broadest spectrum of
users with disabilities.   For example, screen reader reviews assess how a
web page is interpreted by screen reading technologies used by the visually
impaired, identifying where information is not being conveyed and how to
make it readable.

- Completed 79 Usability related projects; design reviews, usability tests,
card sorts, and client consulting, for 37 MIT DLCs.  Usability works to
ensure that a website, application, or business process meets the needs of
end users and stakeholders within a given technological environment.  By
advocating for end user needs, an increase in productivity and reduction in
errors can be achieved resulting in less training and fewer calls to help
desks.

- In collaboration with MIT Facilities, published the first online MIT
Campus Accessibility Map http://web.mit.edu/campus-map/pdf/mit-accessibility-color-2009.pdf,
providing information on the major means of physical access to the MIT
campus for persons with mobility impairments.

- 27% increase in Adaptive Technology consults (over FY08Q3).

- Record number (45) of accessibility reviews, a 41% increase over same quarter last year.
- A 28% increase in student ATIC users (23) over same quarter last year.
-  Campus Accessibility Map: in conjunction with MIT Facilities, finalized printable PDF version of campus map with accessibility features, to be posted online in January 09. 
- MIT Diversity Congress Captioning: with AMPS, facilitated live captioning of the MIT Diversity Congress broadcast on 11/18/08.
