Purpose: Crowdsourcing Reactor Designs
The purpose of creating this wiki is to efficiently crowdsource good ideas from the worldwide community, to improve upon MIT's Offshore Floating Nuclear Plant (OFNP) concept. You can read an initial press release about the idea here. In essence, we developed this idea in response to the accident at the Fukushima Daiichi plant which began on March 11, 2011. We want to create a type of nuclear reactor that can "ride out" any earthquake, tsunami, or severe storm (typhoons, choppy seas) by being inherently resistant to their effects. It floats on top of tsunamis (whose wave heights are proportional to the depth of the ocean underneath) and is unaffected by earthquakes.
We Need You!
While we are proud of our initial ideas, they are far from perfect. That's why we want your help to improve upon our ideas, and inject your knowledge, expertise, and creativity into a plant concept that could make nuclear power even safer, more affordable, and ensure domestic energy security for countries who invest in nuclear power.
How to Contribute
Contributing is easy:
Background Reading: We suggest that you start by reading through the current reactor design, which will be updated as high quality submissions are accepted by the MIT team.
Choose a Topic: You may choose to work on any aspect of the design, from the overall schematic, to a specific sub-system, even something that we haven't thought about yet. However, we are particularly interested in your thoughts about coping with ship collisions and underwater attacks.
Craft a Submission: Write your thoughts in a way that is easy to understand. These may be as simple as "Why don't you do this?", to a fairly complete design specification or justification for a new/improved sub-system. Figures/sketches are a great way to communicate your idea effectively. Please limit your submission to no more than three pages. Remember, we have to read every one, and we're doing so in our free time!
Submit Your Idea to Us: Save your submission as a PDF, and send it to us via email to floating-reactor@mit.edu. Please read the disclaimer about intellectual property submitted to us, you will have to confirm that you have read & understood it before authorizing your submission. Winning submissions will be proudly displayed, and if we accept your idea, we will pay you $500-2000, depending on the scope and impact of the idea.
