Working Title of Project: Energy Reports: can we add to the scans?
Submitted by: Chris Sherratt, gcsherra@mit.edu, 253-5648

Brief description of project:
Energy is being researched at a great pace at MIT, and there are requests for this literature, in science, engineering and technology, we often consult the past to build to the future. Thousands of technical reports, in paper and fiche, which MIT owns, are not exposed, physically or bibliographically,  to our energy researchers. The end product here is to collaborate with other entities already involved in digitizing a subset of these reports and expose access to them,
Work type:
Working in conjunction with DOE's OSTI, the TRAIL project (http://digicoll.manoa.hawaii.edu/techreports/index.php?c=1)and other national labs, MIT can contribute to this national effort, and thus bring more energy related work into useful form for this campus and the world.
Is there existing metadata?:
Research publications, DOE Sponsored Technical Reports
Copyright:
Database, Energy Citations Database, and DOE's Office of Scientific and Technical Information likely have bib records. Some individual records are in Worldcat, possibly.
Spatial Extent:
unknown, Because NTIS sells some of these, despite reporting on research sponsored by the federal government, some body probably holds copyright. Many of these were distributed through a federal depository program, however.
Approximate years covered in content:
1960-1996, estimated

List the factors necessary to produce this product:
Do you have any comments regarding the condition of the content:

Many of these reports are in pristine condition. Most are in good condition. They have not been in use since they arrived as a gift to MIT in 1996 or so, as part of the so-called Anderson Gift. If we were to include the scanning for microfiche, the quality of the fiche depends on its original rendering into fiche.

Email to Chris to request a meeting for consultation with DOT:

Chris, Thank you again for your nomination of Energy Reports (plus) from the Anderson Gift.  The Digital Operations Team (Carl Jones, Jenn Morris, Ann Marie Willer, Rob Wolfe) would like to meet with you to discuss your nomination in more detail.  This would be a discussion and we would have lots of questions for you so we could entertain what the next steps would be for this nomination. I hope this time works for you.  I wasn’t able to access your calendar.  If this time is inconvenient just let me know. Thanks, Beverly Chris' reply back with links for our consultation:bturner@mit.edu

Thank you for the phone call earlier.  I have spoken with my boss and several others and OSTI would be happy to help as much as possible.

Here is an idea that might be helpful.  You could use Information Bridge as a discovery tool.  You might try pulling some of the reports and spot checking to see if there is a record in Information Bridge (IB). Information Bridge contains only full text back to 1990, with a few other documents available as we have had special requests.  Since the Information Bridge records are in the Energy Citations Database, using ECD to narrow down what has been scanned vs. what has bibliographic info vs. what has no record at all could also be useful.  If you are interested in copy cataloging, both IB and ECD have XML feeds and IB has OAI and MARC Records.  With the MARC Records for IB we recently added a search by DOE Laboratory feature. Erin C.
