- Finish looking at box types
Maggie: Dates and Events (see draft companies page) Nice way to post information but there doesnt seem to be a way to use it to do registration. Is there a way we could link it to a form? You can use the i button for descriptive info but who would look. Might be better to actually include the description in the even itself. Remlee will ask if libguides could put in an email link. (You could do with html codes but the whole point of this is to not have to know this. argh) Probably not any better than using rich text box. Then it would be easier to link to an email address.
Documents and Files -Maggie: Really easy to updload cheatsheets. Would be nicer to be able to link the handout say, in a box with a database. But could still be used for a whole mess of handout. Any format of document can be put in. Should we recommend that people only use this? Probably not. There would be times when linking to a document might be better. So: Use for pulling together a group of docs. Note: If people do put a bunch of documents on a page they'll need to pay attention to keeping updated.
If you upload an image using this the results are unsatisfactory.
Delicious Clouds: Georgiana looked at it. Doesnt see that we would use it much unless using for virtual reference. The display of the tag are really ugly. You can put in order of frequency of use or alphabetical. Has an option to include the number of items tagged with a given tags. You can only use this if you have a delicious account. We don't like this. Recommend that we don't use this.
Books in the catalog: Anything else to say? Sometimes linking to amazon can be problematic to get the image. What do we recommend? Always create a link to the Barton record from the title. This is the only box that you could include images. Is there a way to throw images of books in the RSS feeds. No, not now. Remlee will double check with Darcy.
Rich Text box--Just cutting and pasting from other pages worked well. But, what about editing complicated tables. When we tried briefly it was fine but Angie has recollections of problems, particularly changing fonts.
Interactive Polls: Angie reported that thhe text of the poll (ie the question you are asking) has to be in the box. There are only 7 poll response options. There is an imbedded link option. You can only vote once but maybe just once per day. Could be neat for a classroom setting. Shows the results instantly. No way to say download data. More for quick and dirty survey responses.
User links: If a user submits a link it is automatically posted but sent to editor who can remove it. The automatic submission is a little troublesome.
Embedded video: Angie has notes on how to get videos out of tech tv. Cut the code and paste into the box. We'd need to play around with it for awhile. We don't have the code to imbed our tutorials until they are in Tech TV. Would it be better to just link to videos instead of imbedding them? See her notes in her notes on box types. And you can't control the size of the video. Remlee said that imbedding utube was very easy. They have an imbed link on utube.
- Review our charge
Remlee envisionsing presenting guidelines with examples to submit to RISG and UIG. Can we think of really good examples illustrating the policies. What about providing the rationale? Only if it really makes sense to put it in.
- Talk about documentation
- Review what Marion's done (if she's ready) --we'll do this at our next meeting.
How to divide up the documentation responsibilities
So far what we've talked about is thrown up on a page, modelling along the lines of the video tutorials. Sending as a word document is fine.
1. Setting up profile
2. Page layout
3. General practices:Things that Nicole and and Darcy might be able to fix? General look and feel questions. (For instance the greyed out box headings.)
Next time: Marion's work, the look and feel in general and dividing documentation.
