SAFETY PRECAUTIONS:

  • All participants must wear safety glasses, closed-toed shoes.

  • Call MIT Police 617-253-1212 to report an emergency.

GOALS:

  • Integrate the active separation mechanism effectively and safely

  • Validate integration of our hardware components

OVERVIEW:

The active separation mechanism is brought to an open, clear space. The mechanism is integrated by hand, with the assistance of a compression device for compressing the springs.

MATERIALS:

  • Compression application device

  • Wire cutters

  • Various screwdrivers

  • Shear pins

  • 6-32 Screws, 8-32 Screws

  • ASIT components:

    • Donut

    • Staging cone and staging cone base

    • Staging cone bulkhead

    • 4 springs

    • 4 rods

    • Nichrome wire

    • Electrical wire

    • Fastening components for nichrome wire

    • Safety pins

ASIT INTEGRATION PROCEDURE:

  1. All modules of ASIT are detached

  2. Attach guide rods for springs to staging cone bulkhead

  3. Slide springs onto rods and attach springs to bulkhead

  4. Attach length of electrical wire to length of nichrome wire

  5. Thread nichrome wire through center hole in bulkhead and attach nichrome wire on the top side of the bulkhead (the length of nichrome wire that extends below the bulkhead should be longer than the rods)

  6. Thread electrical wire down through the dedicated hole in the bulkhead

  7. Align staging cone base with staging cone, and staging cone base bulkhead, attach screws

  8. Thread nichrome wire and electrical wire through dedicated holes in the Donut

  9. Align and insert springs/rods with holes in the donut base and compress springs

  10. Insert safety pins

  11. Fasten nichrome to donut bulkhead using tension fastener, trim as necessary

  12. Integrate electrical wire with avionics

  13. Attach donut to booster airframe using shear pins

  14. Align sustainer with staging cone accordingly (relative to grooves), insert assembly
