Design
Hermes III Disk Gap Band parachute is designed after the Hermes I DGB, with some modifications to make the manufacturing process easier.
Disk is made out of one piece of fabric cut into an octagon.
Band is two rectangular pieces of fabric sewn together.
Materials
- Ripstop nylon, uncalendered
- 1/2 inch Kevlar webbing
300 lb Technora linesUsed knotted Kevlar lines instead since the small Technora lines were too small to fingertrap- Nylon thread
Manufacturing Process
- Make disk by folding the fabric in half and drawing octagon shape.
- Cut octagon and circular vent hole.
- Sew webbing onto disk with zigzag stitch. The top of the radial webbing is sewn into a loop to add a line through later.
Ideally, the vent and skirt reinforcements would be sewn on first, followed by the radial bands. The pictures will show the radial bands going on first. Also, the vent reinforcement can be done on the front or back of the disk. - Cut band to length equal to perimeter of disk, sewing multiple pieces together if necessary.
- Sew radial webbing onto the band at an equal spacing, ideally covering any seams. Leave a gap between the disk and band. Include loops on the bottom of the band for attaching the lines.
- Sew reinforcement webbing onto the top and bottom of the band.
- Fingertrap the technora lines and attach to vent and band.
