Summary

With the VMware deal that MIT negotiated, we have a great opportunity to leverage virtualization as a way to provide a computing environment to students and faculty for teaching and learning.  FSX is exploring different ways in which we can leverage virtualization to enhance the offerings available today and enable students, researchers and faculty to run consistent and easy to setup environments on their own machines regardless of the host operating system.  Virtualization enables us to provide applications that only run on Windows, to be utilized from Macintosh and Linux machines.  It also provides a way for IS&T to preconfigure an operating environment with things like software and printers.
