On, 8/18/09 Jon Hunt met with Paul Lembo at VMware to review some of the questions and those that have emerged from this exploration.  At this point, there are no known show stoppers that would prevent us from creating and distributing an XP VM with software installed like DUSP has been doing.

Membership in a domain would be especially challenging without using a VMware VUE infrastructure and VDI.

The size of an XP image would be around the 16GB mark to begin with and with user data can grow.

Pre-authenticating the students before launching the VM would only work if we leveraged VMware ACE with domain login which means a read-only VM which poses additional challenges.

Additional notes from the meeting with VMware 8/18/2009

Next Steps

  1. Decide if we proceed with this project and identify resources for it.
    1. YES, we proceed
  2. Create list of applications and configurations for standard student Windows machine
    1. Leverage DUSP VM - need to check with Duncan
    2. Leverage Laptop Loaner Image - Evaluated and not useful
    3. Meet with OEIT for GIR Software - Software Stack for Student VM
  3. Identify ways to rerun Windows first logon to get student usernames for individual's VM
    1. Cannot get that dialog and include the Encrypted Product Key using sysprep.  Will need instructions to create new user account going forward
  4. Create and Document a Proof of Concept Windows XP VM with applications
    1. Jonathan is working on it - Instructions for Setting up Initial VM
  5. Circulate that for review and testing within OEIT, DUSP, DITR, FSX
  6. Decide if project moves forward
