What is this project?

The FSX team in IS&T is examining options for providing public scanning facilities in Athena clusters. One of the devices we're evaluating is the BookScanStation in this pilot project.

The BookScanStation is a large-format flatbed scanner connected to a touchscreen computer. It permits scanning of documents to various file formats and storage locations. Currently, the device can e-mail the scanned document, save it to a USB device, upload it to Google Docs, or upload it to Athena. (Uploading to Athena is currently disabled pending debugging of connection problems.)

Where is this device?

The Scan Station is located in the W20-575 Athena cluster, at the far end of the first row as you walk in.

How do I use it?

Touch the screen to begin. The interface has large, easy-to-read buttons that will guide you through the scanning process.

How long will the pilot run?

The pilot runs from October 10, 2011 through December 12, 2011.

What happens after the pilot?

That depends on feedback from students like you. If the pilot proves successful, we may retain this station and add more in the future. If overall student feedback is negative (or nonexistent), we will pursue other options.

How can I give feedback?

We're glad you asked. Please fill out our survey at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/IST-SCAN. We know everyone hates web surveys, so we made it very short (4 required questions, 1 optional), however if you would prefer to send feedback via e-mail, you can do so to scanning-pilot (at) mit.edu.
