Cognos generating blank PDF pages from reports

If you're running into a problem in Cognos where you're trying to generate a PDF from a report and the resulting page in the browser is blank here's how you fix it:

  1. Quit out of all of your applications.
  2. Remove all old versions of Adobe Reader (earlier than version 10). The current version of Adobe Acrobat Reader is XI.
  3. Make sure you are running the latest version of Firefox for Organizations. If you're not sure, download the latest version and install it. On a Mac, you may need to delete the old version of Firefox out of the Applications Folder (Mac) first.  In Windows 7 go to Control Panels -> Programs and Features to uninstall Firefox.  Choose NOT to remove any user information for Firefox if asked. We want to keep the Firefox settings and bookmarks.
  4. Make sure you have the latest Adobe Reader installed. If you're not sure, download the latest version and install it.
  5. Run Firefox and log back into Cognos.
  6. Generate the report and then output as PDF.
