How to Turn off Notifications in OS X

What are Notifications?

Notifications are the little text bubbles and alerts that appear in the upper right part of your Mac OS X screen.  They can be calendar alerts, email alerts, Drop Box alerts, etc.

Wow, they're annoying.  How do I turn them off?

In Mac OS 10.9 there is a notification setting in Apple-> System Preferences.

Select on Notifications and adjust the individual notifications as desired (eg. email, etc).  If you wish to turn them off completely select none.
