This wiki is dedicated to a discussion of how the findings of physics education research can be applied to construct problems that promote the development of problem-solving skill in college-level physics students.

The goal of this textbook is to teach you a new way to think.

Physics will ask you to:

  • Look at the world through the lenses of simple mathematical models that shed light on the underlying symmetries and structures in nature.
  • Develop a facility in using these models to solve problems with real-world applications both quantitatively and qualitatively.
  • Learn how to check your solutions to problems against the assumptions of the models to develop confidence and further your understanding.

The form of this textbook will allow for student contributions.

Certain content areas will allow you to make contributions of your own.  Before contributing, please read the RELATE wiki Copyright and Waiver.

Currently, the discussion contains two principle threads:

1.)  What features of physics problems confound novice problem solving techniques and/or reward expert-like problem solving techniques?

Discussion in this thread centers around a list of problem types that encourage expert-like problem solving.

2.)  Can a modeling approach to physics be usefully reinforced within the structure of physics problems?
