During launch operations, it is often helpful for larger rocketry projects to have some members of the launch crew move away from the launch pad in a direction away from the wind direction in order to better gauge the rocket's trajectory in flight. In addition, an away team is able to conduct telemetry, photographic, and radio measurements at a distance that can help track the rocket later on in the flight.

During the Hermes 2 flight, there was half a dozen individuals who handled telemetry antennas, radio comms, and photography of the rocket flight at a distance.

It is especially important to maintain good radio communications between pad operations and the away team. There can be difficulty in communication at the moment that the rocket is vertical on pad as many people are occupied with ensuring their duties are being fulfilled without explicitly ensuring good communications. In order to avoid a lack of communication between teams, it is helpful to keep an open line between pad operations and any other radio comms.
