Purpose

The purpose of the mission package tube is to provide structure for the rocket and enclose other components with a smooth aerodynamic surface.

Requirements

  • Mission package tube ID must interface correctly with FRR

  • Must be the correct length for the rocket to have a stable margin

  • Must allow access to cameras and avionics controls

  • Must withstand axial load from the piston recovery system

Details

The mission package tube is a fiberglass G12 tube with a 3.9" inner diameter and 4.020" outer diameter. It is purchased COTS from Wildman Rocketry (https://wildmanrocketry.com/collections/fiberglass-1/products/g12-4-0). It includes various holes to mount and access other structures within the rocket. On the booster, the mission package tube encloses the forward half of the rocket.

Manufacturing

The fiberglass tube was purchased COTS from Wildman Rocketry. It will be cut down to a length of 23.5", and necessary holes will be added using the mill and a radial indexer, including holes to attach to the FRR, mount the piston mount, mount the cameras, and access the avionics tower.

Testing

The mission package tube will be tested by fit checking it with other components to ensure correct alignment and fit, and may be sanded or have holes adjusted if necessary.
