When setting up mailman lists, here's some settings to use:

  • General
    • description and info: something explaining the purpose of the list
    • consider "Should administrator get notices of subscribes and unsubscribes?" (admin_notify_mchanges)
    • change max message size to something larger: 400 recommended
  • Password
  • Non-digest options
    • Consider setting a footer: for example, tape groups probably want a link to the signup spreadsheet in the footer
  • Digest options
    • Conceivably we could disable digests? Digests seem dumb to me, but hopefully nobody turns them on accidentally
    • You could set the footer here too?
  • Privacy options
    • Subscription rules
      • Consider requiring approval to sign up
      • Consider making list membership admin only?
    • Sender filters
      • Consider defaulting new members to moderated
      • Change "Action to take when anyone posts to the list from a domain with a DMARC Reject/Quarantine Policy" to "Munge From" (this prevents messages from certain senders from always getting placed in spam folders)
  • Archiving options
    • public archives might make sense?
    • yearly or quarterly archives may be better than monthly
