Apple Mail Color Pinwheel/Beachball of Death in Mac OS 13 Ventura

The Problem: You are running a Mac with Mac OS 13 Ventura and your Apple Mail experiences a color pinwheel/Beachball of Death that causes your Apple Mail to become unresponsive.

The Solutions:

I. Solution 1. Do this one first.

  1. Shut down your Mac
  2. Boot Mac in Safe Mode. Safe mode clears a bunch of caches and resets certain system files.

    2. Please note there are different instructions if your Mac has an Intel vs Apple Silicon M chip. Be sure you follow the instructions EXACTLY.
  3. Once in Safe Mode, go ahead and run Apple Mail. It should start up again just fine.
  4. Quit out of Apple Mail
  5. Shut down your Mac
  6. Turn your Mac back on and use Apple Mail as usual.

II. Solution 2. After you've done Solution 1, if the beach ball eventually comes back, this one seems to work to correct it.

  1. Force quit out of AppleMail.

  2. Run Apple Mail again.
  3. Apple Mail should be running ok again.
