This project is an extension of an issue discussed at ISTAB. The small-group spaces in W20-575D and 56-129 are under-utilized and under-publicized.

Publicity

The spaces are under-publicized. People don't know that they're available or what they can be used for.

Solution: Publicize on door to W20-575, as well as signs within cluster directing people to back room. Put signs on the door explaining policies and documenting procedures.

Status: In Progress

Investigate 56-129 space

TBD

Not enough laptop spaces

We frequently find monitors and peripherals disconnected so students can use their laptops in the cluster. The reading room is often full.

Solution: Move Windows machines into main cluster (which is under-utilized anyway), and make one row of back room "laptop stations", with KB, mouse, monitor, power, and network.

Status: In Progress

Notes: Tables should have anchor points for laptops. Consider Kensington Anchor Point (Model K64613WW, Staples: 887427) or Kensington Grommet Anchor (Model K64612WW, Staples: 887426). Anchor point has one-way screws and is permanent. Gromment model uses standard grommet holes (which don't exist on cluster tables)

Every 2 workstations hsould have a power strip. Consider Fellowes 6-outlet metal power strip for durability. (Staples 589702)

CopyCam uses floppy disks

Ensure network connectivity works and publicize instructions.

New set of whiteboard markers.

Status: Complete

Whiteboard markers ordered from Staples, 4/15
CopyCam tested and instructions printed up 4/15.

Consider better lighting? Though quality of saved images is not inherently better with newer models (see also http://whiteboard.fsm.northwestern.edu/index.html, which is a CopyCam Pro (USB)).

Display panels are frequently unplugged

Ensure there are instructions to use and ensure it works. Consider an Extron box to connect -122 and -123 to the flat panel, optionally. Test audio connection to displays.

Status: In Progress

Powerport doesn't work

Replace plug, contact facilities.

Other renovations

  • Fiber's location is inconvenient
  • Consider moving 122 or 123 into western-most small group space, to allow hookup to large display.

More Small Group Spaces

More spaces are needed for small (2-3 person) groups to share either Athena workstation or laptop. Consider cubicle-style approach, with Athena workstation and 2nd input on monitor for laptop.

Status: Research

Inquiry to Chris about disposition of N42 cubicles.
