Research Domain:

industrial ecology, societal metabolism, waste management

Research Methodology:

sustainability drivers analysis, material flow assessment

Research Description:

Jonathan's research investigates the generation of nonhazardous solid waste by American manufacturing and primary materials industries. This high-volume, low-toxicity waste is a candidate for the type of eco-restructuring of industrial envisioned by the field of industrial ecology, in which wastes from one industrial process are used as inputs to another. In the United States, this waste category is very poorly understood, aside from a vague and out of date acknowledgement of its large tonnage. This research will draw from a wide variety of quantitative and qualitative data sources to understand the drivers of waste generation from 1985 to the present.

Unknown macro: {htmlcomment} focuses on environmental impacts from the consumption and disposal of material resources, particularly in an urban context.
