CCA tools is our preferred way to perform a logical transfer. It is a set of utilities created by the Canadian Center for Architecture. CCA tools runs a number of tools in addition to transferring the files which will allow us to better understand a transfer, such as file type identification, virus scanning, PII detection, and checksum creation and will package the files in a way Archivematica can understand.
There are two options, SIP Creator and Folder Processor. See the descriptions under each tool to see which makes sense for your use case. SIP Creator is our preferred tool for logical transfers in most cases.
SIP Creator
SIP creator allows you to select multiple folders in order to construct a single SIP (Submission Information Package) from files or folders. It is our preferred tool for logical transfers in most cases.
Open the “CCA tools” folder on the BitCurator desktop screen.
Click the “SIP creator” icon
Click “Select Source” and choose the area where the files are stored (ex. an external hard drive)
Select the folder(s) that you want to transfer using the checkboxes next to them.
Select the destination, choose the Archivematica transfer folder (submission/Transfer) if the items are ready to go into Archivematica. If additional work needs to be done, select the BitCurator shared folder.
Name the SIP as the accession number plus “acc” at the end, (ex. 2020_005acc).
Unless you have additional information to add to a metadata/submissionDocumentation folder, select the bag SIP option.
Also select the run bulk_extractor option unless positive there’s no PII.This tool needs to be updated in order to run bulk_extractor in the way we want through it. You will run it later through the bulk reviewer tool.Click “Create SIP” and wait for the tool to finish running.
Add any submission documentation to the metadata/submissionDocumentation folder within the SIP.
Note
The gift agreement should be added into the relevant collection digital control folder in a subfolder by accession number. It should not be included with files transferred here.

Folder Processor
Folder processor allows you to select multiple folders and create an individual SIP for each folder. Use this option if you have things that should be submitted as separate SIPs, either due to their size or having content from different collections. The generally preferred method is using SIP creator for each individual folder but if you feel that you need to go this route, note that you should place each folder within folders named after their corresponding accession (ex. 2020_029acc, 2020_030acc, etc.) prior to going through this workflow. If not, the tool will retain the name of whatever the folder title you select as the top-level name of the package (causing issues later).
Open the “CCA tools” folder on the BitCurator desktop screen.
Click the “Folder Processor” icon
Click “Select Source” and choose the directory containing the folders you want to transfer and/or package and select “Open” in the top right of the window that popped up.
The listing of folders/files will appear in the “Directory Selector” portion of the tool. Click on the folders you want to process and become individual SIPs.
Select the destination, choose the Archivematica transfer folder (submission/Transfer) if the items are ready to go into Archivematica. If additional work needs to be done, select the BitCurator shared folder.
Also select the run bulk_extractor option unless positive there’s no PII.This tool needs to be updated in order to run bulk_extractor in the way we want through it. You will run it later through the bulk reviewer tool.Click Create SIPs and wait for the tool to finish running.
Add any submission documentation to the metadata/submissionDocumentation folder within the appropriate SIP.
Note
The gift agreement should be added into the relevant collection digital control folder in a subfolder by accession number. It should not be included with files transferred here.
